Psychology Teaching Jobs

Assistant TeachingContrary to some opinions, Psychology is not an easy option. School and sometimes university students often find this a very hard subject as they struggle with the concept that there may be no single ‘right’ answer. In Britain, Psychology has been included on GCSE Science examinations papers (taken by 16 year olds) although the subject is still classified as a Humanity. Many Psychology teachers in schools are required to take on another responsibility as well. This may be administrative or another subject altogether. It is important to note here that Educational Psychologists are a different breed altogether as they do not teach Psychology but provide a learning experience to people with Special Educational Needs using their Psychology expertise.

So what of the prospects for a Psychology Teacher looking for a job?

While Science is taught at some level from a very early age in almost all curricula, Psychology is not usually taught as a subject on its own until at least High School. In most cases, a Psychology teacher needs a minimum of two qualifications, a Psychology degree and a teaching qualification. Obviously the higher the level you are teaching, the more advanced your own qualifications need to be. Psychology teachers have jobs in high schools as well colleges and universities. They can work in commercial environments, such as Marketing and Public Relations. They can be full time, part time or include a research element. They can be combined with other disciplines and involve varying levels of administrative responsibilities, depending on the size of the department and your position within it. Do not be surprised if you are asked to teach Physical Education or Religious Education in a High School setting. In order to truly fulfil your desire to teach Psychology to students, you may be better off in an adult college or University setting and will need to make sure your degree is at a high enough level to qualify you for such a job.

So, now we have established that being a Psychology Teacher is a good thing, how do you find a job? Well, you first need to decide where you would like to live and look in that location. If you do not particularly care where but really care about the type of job you do, then you may be best registering with one of the hundreds of worldwide Psychology Teacher job search agencies. These may specialise in Teaching or in Psychology itself. You may wish to investigate the type of establishments you are interested in. So, if you want to carry out research in a particular area, look for a university that specialises in that field. If you want promotion prospects and hope to head your own school department, you may want to go for an area people are loathe to move to. Other positions that can apply to a highly specialised Psychology Teacher or Lecturer, or even Professor, include rarified subjects such as Criminology, Serial Killer Profiling and Market Profiling. You may even decide that the world of Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations is where you want to be and apply for a job delivering Psychology Training to business people.
